House Bill 1129 – Evidence-based Practices For Offender Services
This bill continues an evidence-based capacity resource for offender services. The center will make use of best practices in the criminal justice field to ensure that we are doing everything we can to reduce recidivism. I believe that this is good policy because it will keep our communities safe while saving taxpayer dollars. I am proud that this bill passed the House Judiciary Committee 11-0.
House Bill 1199 – Nursing Home Provider Fee Statute
This is a simple fix that will reduce courtroom costs and save taxpayer dollars by clarifying the definition of a continuing care retirement community. This change will allow the state to spend less on court cases debating the language, and instead focus these resources caring for seniors.
House Bill 1041 – Modernizing the Colorado Open Records Act
Have you heard the expression, “sunlight is the best disinfectant”? In Colorado, we’re able to shine a light on government agencies through the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) to hold our elected officials accountable. I am sponsoring a bill this year to modernize CORA by allowing citizens to request records to be sent via email or mail, rather than making citizens go to a government office in person. This change will save time and money while giving citizens greater access to their government. I am proud that this bill passed the House with broad bipartisan support and has been signed into law.
House Bill 1135 - Voter Pre-Registration at Age 16 & House Bill 1147 - Voter Registration at Public Higher Education Institutions
American citizens between the ages of 18 and 25 have the lowest voter turnout of any demographic. House Bill 1135 makes it easier for young voters to exercise the most fundamental political right - the right to vote. When voters turn 16, they will be able to “preregister to vote,” meaning that they will automatically become registered upon turning 18. House Bill 1147 requires state institutions of higher education to extend students the opportunity to register to vote when they first register with the institution, thus providing young Americans with another opportunity to engage in the political process and have their voices heard.
House Bill 1194 – Supporting Military Families
This bill extends the in-state tuition benefit to spouses of active members of the armed forces stationed in Colorado. I supported this bill because military families make great sacrifices to defend our liberties. I want to make sure they know their state is behind them and assist these families in building a stable and successful life.
